BELGRADE UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday evening that the entire region had undergone a significant transformation. He added that the region had an important role not only for Europe, but for the whole world. Kosovo visit in line with Resolution 1244, UN head says Ban will on Saturday start a visit to the Western Balkan countries. Ban told Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) that he would visit six countries and Kosovo, but underlined that his visit to Kosovo would be in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 1244. “I have a duty to meet Head of the UNMIK Farid Zarif and members of the UN Mission, and I will also have an opportunity to meet Kosovo officials,” he stressed. When asked what the current role of the UNMIK is, Ban said that the UNMIK's mandate would be continued in line with the UN SC Resolution 1244, but in the interim period EULEX was taking on a greater role, while the UNMIK's role was being reduced. “However, the UNMIK still has an important role and mandate,” Ban stressed, adding that such role of the UN Mission was the reason for his visit to Kosovo. The UN secretary general announced that during his visit to Serbia he would confer with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, Prime Minister-Designate Ivica Dacic and Vuk Jeremic who will be presiding over the UN General Assembly next year.
