B92 has learned that the Socialists (SPS) will be asking the Democrats (DS) to agree to make Ivica Dacic Serbia's next prime minister. This is the condition that the Democrats - who previously nominated their leader Boris Tadic for the same position - will have to meet in order to form a government with the Socialists. "Socialists decide to seek premiership for their leader" This means that a decision on this issue will be made during the coming weekend, when it should also become clear whether the SPS will turn to negotiations with the Progressives (SNS). The surprise move by the Socialists, however, could have been anticipated, considering that the SNS - led until recently by Serbia's new president, Tomislav Nikolic - also talked to the SPS and offered "almost everything they asked for" - including to make Ivica Dacic prime minister. During the day on Friday and over the weekend, SPS, DS and URS party leaders will meet, when it should become clear if they will form a government together, or if a parliamentary majority will be formed by the SPS and URS - which already have a cooperation agreement - and the Progressives. On the night of the elections on May 6, when his party came in third with 44 mandates, Ivica Dacic hinted that he would seek the premiership. During the weeks of government negotiations that followed, his pre-election coalition was publicly saying that they would form a government with their allies in the outgoing cabinet - the Democrats. The DS has 67 seats in the new Serbian parliament, while the Progressives have 73. A new government will be elected with the support of at least 126 out of 250 MPs. On Thursday, the Belgrade-based NIN weekly reported that URS party leader Mladjan Dinkic "personally showed a paper containing Dacic's suggestions for a new government", which, according to this, "clearly contain a sentence that says: 'Russians don't want Tadic as prime minister'."
