The head of the EU delegation to Bosnia-Herzegovina has said that this country might apply for EU membership by the end of the year. It can expect to obtain candidacy status early in 2014, said Peter Sorensen. Bosnia could become EU candidate "in early in 2014" These deadlines could be met only under ideal circumstances, Sorensen said in a panel discussion at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, underlining that the country had to carry out a number of reforms, all the way from constitutional to judiciary ones. Progress has been made in Bosnia, but the country needs to make changes in its Constitution in order to become a functional state, Sorensen pointed out. The ranking EU official said that after Croatia joins the EU in 2013, a 6-8 year break should be expected before the next country is admitted. To the question how political changes in Serbia could affect the situation in Bosnia, Sorensen replied that it is still too early for such speculations. The process of reconciliation is an integral part of the EU accession process, and so are good neighborly relations, Sorensen added. He said that claims that genocide was not committed in Srebrenica cannot not contribute to achieving those goals, and added that after the ruling by competent courts, the EU had no dilemma about the genocide.
