The presidential runoff will be a referendum on the EU, say the Democrats, whose leader Boris Tadic will seek his third term in office on May 20. The party said in a statement on Thursday that this was the case because his rival, leader of the Serb Progressives Tomislav Nikolic, "has given up on the European policy". Democrats claim presidential runoff is "referendum on EU" This happened when he signed an agreement with the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), the Democratic Party (DS) said. "After yesterday's agreement signed between the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and DSS, it is clear that by supporting (DSS leader Vojislav) Kostunica, Nikolic has given up on the European policy. Kostunica has explicitly stated on several occasions that giving up on EU integration is a condition for cooperation with his party, and it is evident that Nikolic has accepted that condition in order to get Kostunica's support," the DS released in the statement. This only proves the dangerous inconsistency of Nikolic's policy, which is constantly changing and in which only one thing is consistent - his readiness to say or to do anything so as to gain power, the DS said. DSS and SNS signed an agreement on Wednesday to support Nikolic in the second round of presidential election. Nikolic agreed a referendum should be used to decide whether it is in Serbia's interest to join the EU. A DS rally (Tanjug, file) Tanjug
