So far ten candidates have announced their bid to become Serbia's new president; their candidatures were announced a day after elections were called. They are Boris Tadic (DS), Tomislav Nikolic (SNS), Ivica Dacic (SPS), Cedomir JovanoviC (LDP), Vojislav Kostunica (DSS), Istvan Pastor (SVM), Zoran Stankovic (URS). Tadic yesterday sent a letter to the parliament speaker stating his resignation as head of state, thereby enabling the holding of presidential elections on the same date as parliamentary and local ballots - May 6. Candidates for the forthcoming elections can be run by political parties, coalitions and other political organizations, separately or together, and by civil society organizations. An electoral list is confirmed if at least 10,000 eligible voters support it with their signatures. Parties that are interested in participating in the elections have to submit their lists to the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) no later than 20 days before the holding of elections. No fewer than 45 and no more than 60 days can pass from the day the elections are called until the day they are held. The whole territory of Serbia, together with the polling stations abroad, is one constituency. The elected president is the candidate who receives the majority of votes at the polls. If no candidate receives a majority, the elections are repeated within 15 days with the participation of the two candidates who received the largest number of votes in the first round. The Constitution specifies that the parliament speaker acts on behalf of the president of the state and assumes the duties of the main authority in the defense of the country, commanding the Serbian Army (VS). Under the Constitution of Serbia, the president's term cannot last longer than five years, and the same person cannot be elected to that position more than twice.
