Longtime director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei warned Israel not to enter a war against Iran. "Anyone who attacks Iran is utterly crazy," said the Nobel Peace Prize winner, in a statement for the German media statements, reports APA. Ex-IAEA chief: Anyone who attacks Iran is crazy In his opinion, such an attack would "blow up" the whole region. ElBaradei, however, is skeptical in regard to planned international talks on Iran's nuclear program. He pointed out that it is essential that the current crisis be kept under control until U.S. presidential elections in November. ElBaradei also believes that by attacking Iran, Israel would achieve the opposite of what it wants. "Iran would then accelerate the development of their nuclear weapons - and then with the support of all Iranians, almost the entire Middle East and with the support of many others in the world," he said. Israel, he said, must understand that it can only have security for itself, only if it accepts the Middle East. ElBaradei also pointed out that Israel, the unofficial nuclear power, possesses "at least 200 atomic bombs." "Israel wants perfect security, but such security for one country represents perfect uncertainty of any other state," he said, adding that it is therefore important that the entire Middle East become a zone free of nuclear weapons. Solutions, he added, can only be found at the negotiating table. From the Iranian government ElBaradei seeks "firm guarantees" that nuclear bombs will not be produced. At the same time, he expressed doubt that the planned new talks on Iran's nuclear program could bring speedy progress. ElBaradei further predicted a "summer of tension" until the presidential elections in the U.S., expects "serious talks" only afterwards. "This issue can be resolved only if Americans and Iranians find, at the negotiating table, a way to deal with each other. Until then, we have to manage this crisis and avoid foolish actions," he said. In this, he concluded, Germany has a special role, as the only state without its own nuclear weapons which still has a "moral authority" in relation to Iran, and good relations with Israel.
