Today marks 13 years since the beginning of the NATO attack on the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SRJ) - which consisted of Serbia and Montenegro.

Today marks 13 years since the beginning of the NATO attack on the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SRJ) - which consisted of Serbia and Montenegro. The attacks lasted 11 weeks. According to various estimates, between 1,200 and 2,500 people were killed during the NATO strikes. Anniversary of start of NATO's war against Serbia The bombing, which lasted 78 days, severely damaged the country’s infrastructure, schools, health institutions, cultural monuments, private homes and broadcasting companies. NATO launched its attack on Yugoslavia just before 20:00 CET on March 24, 1999 on orders from then NATO Secretary General Javier Solana. The Yugoslav government declared the state of war the same night. Serbian President Boris Tadic will lay a wreath at a monument to victims of NATO bombing in Aleksinac on Saturday together with Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac and Serbian Army (VS) Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Ljubisa Dikovic. Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas and several foreign ambassadors will on Saturday in Tasmajdan Park lay a wreath at a monument to the children killed in the NATO bombing. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic will lay a wreath at a monument to the killed Serbian police (MUP) members in the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ) headquarters in the Belgrade neighborhood of Batajnica. The NATO bombing, which was considered aggression by the Yugoslav government and numerous legal experts, followed after unsuccessful negotiations about Kosovo in Rambouillet in February and March 1999. The Belgrade authorities estimated at the time that the damage that the country suffered was about USD 100bn and requested compensation from the NATO member states. The bombing ended on June 10 when the UN Security Council Resolution 1244 was adopted. On June 9 VS and NATO representatives signed the Military Technical Agreement was signed near Kumanovo which envisaged withdrawal of VS forces from Kosovo and deployment of international troops.
