Anti-Corruption Council President Verica Barac has died in Belgrade at the age of 57, after a long battle with a serious disease, it has been announced. Reports said that Barac suffered from cancer. She was first diagnosed and treated in 1996, but the illness recurred twice. Barac is described as one of the biggest fighters against corruption in Serbia, who persevered in her opposition to power centers in Serbian politics, economy and society. Born in in a village near Cacak, central Serbia, she was a jurist by trade, and was employed by the state-run agricultural corporation PKB in Belgrade, and subsequently by the local authorities in Cacak. During NATO's bombing in 1999, she publicly protested against the war and the regime of Slobodan Milosevic, reports said today. She was also one of the leaders of the Civil Parliament of Cacak, which split into factions under the authority's strong pressure, after which, in 1999, she joined the Civil Parliament of Serbia (GSP). After the fall of the Milosevic regime, she was sacked as the attorney for the municipality despite a positive report about the service's work submitted by the local assembly. She then joined the G17 Plus office in the town. Barac was appointed head of the Anti-Corruption Council in May 2003. She was the recipient of many awards and honors, including that given for civil courage by the Association of Unions and the House of Justice Strasbourg NGO.
