Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Konuzin has said that the EU perspective for the Balkan countries should not be seen as an option without an alternative. “The focus is laid on evident advantages of this direction of development of the European relations, while less attention is paid to the well-known risks. Participation of the Balkan countries in the EU will undoubtedly have its specific quality,” Konuzin said at the roundtable dubbed “Russia and Balkans: past and perspectives” in Belgrade. Russian ambassador: EU not only option Speaking about the risks, Konuzin pointed to the countries experiencing financial crisis and social-political unrests in the last few months. The Russian ambassador recalled the statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that the world was undergoing accelerated historical processes which had a major impact on the Balkans. When asked whether the process of dissolution of the former Yugoslav state was finished, he said that “there are doubts that it is not”, recalling the Kosovo issue, unresolved border conflicts, and the issue of refugees. Konuzin concluded that it was difficult to find a topic of greater interest today than the one tabled at Wednesday's meeting, stressing that this topic was on the border between the events of the past and the policy which is conducted today and projected for the future. The roundtable is also announced to gather representatives of political parties, NIS Gazprom Neft CEO Kirill Kravchenko, Prime Minister’s Advisor Petar Skundric and Bishop of Backa Irinej Bulovic.
