European Parliament (EP) Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin has stated that Serbia's central issue is now combat against systemic corruption. He added that Serbia should focus on combat against corruption after closing the chapter with the Hague Tribunal and making progress in the dialogue with Pristina. Serbia should focus on corruption, says EP official “Belgrade can deal with systemic corruption. When and how it will do so, it remains to be seen. Corruption exists in the most developed countries, but systemic corruption that reflects in the rule of private interests and political parties has to be overcome. This is not just because of a huge loss the economy and citizens of Serbia bear, but rather because of the rule of law,” Kacin told the Frankfurt-based Serbian language daily Vesti. Speaking about a resolution which should be adopted by the EP soon, he said that the document comprised a number of suggestions, commendation and criticism including both general political issues, such as the dialogue with Pristina, and very concrete ones, such as the City of Belgrade's strategy for 2020. “The work on some issues, such as the combat against corruption, will take years,” he added. “In order for the talks (on EU accession) to be launched, it is necessary to continue the dialogue with Pristina and resolve the problem of telecommunications and energy, as well as to work on full implementation of agreements reached so far. It is also necessary to start working on reintegrating the Serb community north of the Ibar River into a wider Kosovo and to very carefully complete the work of the so-called parallel structures,” Kacin pointed out. “The first test will come with the local elections in Serbia,” the EP rapporteur was quoted as saying. “It remains to be seen whether elections will be called for the local bodies in northern Kosovo as well, and whether they will be held,” he explained.
