Ruling Democratic Party (DS) official Goran Jesic said on Wednesday the DS "must convince voters that it is prepared to tackle economic reforms with resolve". At the same time, said Jesic, who is also mayor of the town of Indjija, the Democrats "should also to apologies for the mistakes made during the tenure of the current government". DS official thinks party should "apologize to voters" "We as a party have indeed made one great mistake. We were dishonest with our voters and did not tell them that an unstoppable economic crisis was approaching our country. That is why we have to apologize," he told the Novi Sad-based Dnevnik daily. Officials of the party - which has been in power for much of the past 12 years as part of several coalitions - should also apologize to their voters "for being late with essential reforms that they started at the beginning of the (current government's term", believes Jesic. Stating that he "did not know why reforms were interrupted", Jesic stressed that it was a fact many in the DS had done their job properly on various levels of authority, and that "the DS has one of the highest ratings in Serbia today." He concurred with views that disappointment and general apathy were present, especially among the DS voters, and underlined "that is precisely why the truth should be told in this campaign. We should tell the people that we did not do a good job at one point, but that we seriously mean to correct that."
