Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Konuzin says his country is not opposed to Serbia joining the EU, but that Serbia should decide on the price it was ready to pay. "I do not wish for the price to be a deterioration of relations with Russia," Konuzin told reporters in the central Serbian town of Cacak on Tuesday. Russian envoy warns about "price of joining EU" Earlier in the day, the top Russian diplomat in Serbia delivered a lecture to the local business community, saying that Serbia's relations with its "new friends" - should the country join the EU - should not come at the expense of its relations with "old friends". Konuzin noted that Serbia exports a large portion of its products to the Russian market, and that the annual value of this trade reaches USD 800mn. These exports are exempt from customs duties thanks to the free trade agreement between the two countries, said the ambassador, who today received the Award of the City of Cacak, given for his "outstanding contribution to the development of economic cooperation between that part of central Serbia and Russian companies". "Russia is the only country with which Serbia has an agreement of this kind. In case of joining the EU, your new friends will not allow you to make use of that agreement," Konuzin told an audience that also included local authorities, councilors, MPs from Cacak, members of the public, and the media. The Russian ambassador concluded by saying that even with her possible "new friends from the EU", Serbia should maintain ties that benefit the country, without dismantling the existing relations with Russia that it now benefits from.
