Belgrade negotiator Borislav Stefanovic has denied media reports that pressure is being exerted on Serbia to reach an agreement with Pristina by mid-February. He told daily Politika that “the pressure is on the other side, at least at this stage”. “Intl. pressure on Pristina, not Belgrade” “I think that our side entered the process wisely and sober-mindedly while sticking to the (UN Security Council) Resolution 1244. The international community’s focus is on Pristina. It is in our interest to find a solution as soon as possible and we have in that sense given several draft solutions. We have been active and constructive and that has strengthened our position ahead of a possible agreement on Pristina’s regional representation,” Stefanovic was quoted as saying. When asked to comment on obvious differences between EU member states’ positions regarding results of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, he said: “It’s an illusion that there are too big differences in assessments. Everybody agrees that the dialogue has so far given excellent and applicable results. Only a few hoped that we could reach six complex agreements in less than a year. Of course, some capitals want to see faster and further progress, but so do we. We will not sacrifice our national interest in Kosovo and Metohija, Constitution and laws with our progress in the negotiations. We are having the dialogue in order solve concrete issues, not to get someone’s assessment”. When asked whether the agreement on Kosovo’s regional representation was a condition for Serbia in order to get the EU candidate status, Stefanovic stressed that the conditions were clearly stated in the European Council’s conclusion. “We will do everything to fulfill them if those solutions are not contrary to our Constitution, laws and national interest in Kosovo and Metohija,” the team head explained.
