Serbian tennis player and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has been named Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards in London. "This award means a lot to me, my team, my family, and my country," said Djokovic, who attended the ceremony on Monday with his girlfriend Jelena Ristic. Djokovic named Laureus World Sportsman of Year "I will use this opportunity to thank the Laureus Foundation for doing a great job around the world, and I am grateful to the members of the Academy and journalists who nominated me," said the tennis star - the first athlete from our region winning this prestigious award. "It is a great honor to win in the competition with world sports elite. I had the best year of my career, and this award is the result of work of my entire team. They made me into who I am today," he underlined. Djokovic recalled his recent thrilling victory in the five-set Australian Open final against Rafael Nadal, stressing that this was the most exciting match of his career. "We were both at the end of our strength, especially at the closing ceremony when we could not stand on our feet, and they gave us chairs. However, I learned how to handle the strain, both physically and mentally. Now, I have much more confidence, and I believe that I can continue the winning streak," Djokovic said. Legendary German tennis player Boris Becker, who presented Djokovic with the award, said that "the amazing Serb is yet to win many trophies". "It is with great pride that he plays for Serbia, I am certain that he will win much more trophies, and that he will give his best to dethrone Nadal at the Olympics in London," Becker said.
