Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic qualified early on Tuesday as "very dangerous if the decision on holding a referendum in northern Kosovo is made". It wold not bring benefit to people in the province, but rather cause Serbia harm, especially in the situation when dialogue with Pristina should be resumed, he said, a day after local Serb leaders agreed to go ahead with the referendum as planned. Minister: People will not benefit from referendum "I elieve that no one has the right to come into a conflict with the state on which he depends, especially because the state is fighting for Kosovo and Metohija day and night," he told Belgrade-based Pink TV, adding that "at this moment Serbia needs unity". The minister noted that during last week's meeting with representatives of the four municipalities in northern Kosovo he got the impression that understanding exists, but that their political headquarters exert pressures to hold the referendum. Certain individuals take more care about party and personal interests than about the citizens, he said. He pointed out that Serbia must also think about the Serbs south to the Ibar River, who also fear what could happen if the referendum is held. North of the river Serbs form the majority population, but in the south they live in scattered and isolated enclaves. Bogdanovic said that obtaining the EU candidate status is Serbia's goal and also the interest of the citizens in Kosovo, although some in the southern province "say that there are more important things than the EU". By acquiring the EU candidate status and joining the EU we would fight for the fulfillment of our interests in Kosovo easier, he said. Goran Bogdanovic (Beta, file) Tanjug
