Serbia's Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic is a candidate for president of the United Nations General Assembly, a Belgrade daily writes. "Serbia has officially submitted its Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic as a candidate for the President of the United Nations General Assembly," Vecernje Novosti wrote, citing an unnamed source. Jeremic candidate for UN General Assembly president Vuk Jeremic has in the meantime confirmed the news. If elected, Jeremic would head the General Assembly for one year, and his first official appearance would come in September 2012, when the new annual session begins, writes the paper. Jeremic could also still serve as foreign minister in Serbia's next government, says the article, and adds that such an outcome would represent "a significant confirmation of Serbia's reputation and penetration and visibility of our foreign policy". Serbia's representative holding the office "at the epicenter of world diplomacy" would mean better contacts with key international factors, where decisions are made influencing Serbia. Head of the UN General Assembly is tasked with scheduling its sessions, determining its agenda, putting forward proposals concerning UN peacekeeping missions and international initiatives, the daily notes, and adds that "many former, current, and future foreign minister, premiers and presidents" served in the position. According to this, Jeremic at the moment has one competitor for the office - Lithuania's foreign minister. The voting will take place by mid-2012, and the winner will need the support of a simple majority of represented countries. Vecernje Novosti notes that Serbia last year hosted a Non-Alligned Movement summit, "and Jeremic can count on the backing of those countries", as well as of the country's traditional friends and UN Security Council members Russia and China.
