Serbia’s Interior Minister Ivica Dacic told B92 that it was true that some state officials had received threatening messages. He pointed out that police took such information seriously and that it was cooperating with the Military Security Agency (VBA) regarding protection of the state officials on a daily basis. IM confirms threats against state officials “Threatening letters, threatening messages, information received from operatives are a daily occurence in police... There are security assessments and teams of people who are dealing with it and such pieces of information are regarded as very imoportant,“ the IM stressed. He repeated that some used to regard threats against former Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic “with cynicism and laughter”. Dacic said that the investigation would show whether the weapons found in Banja Luka’s Borik sports hall had been prepared for an assassination, adding that he had no new information about the case. When asked whether there had been similar threats against top officials in the last several years, the minister said that threats had occasionally been made by certain criminal groups. He noted that many had been tried and that persons who had been threatened had police protection. “There is no country in which so many people have security as in Serbia,” he underscored. The interior minister said, however, that there had been no organized criminal groups who attempted to assassin any top official in the last several years. Certain media have reported that police received a tip-off that an assassination of President Boris Tadic, Patriarch Irinej, Dacic and Police Director Milorad Veljovic was being prepared.
