Jews in Serbia will start marking Hanukkah on Tuesday, and the celebrations and rituals to mark this holiday will continue until December 27.

Jews in Serbia will start marking Hanukkah on Tuesday, and the celebrations and rituals to mark this holiday will continue until December 27. The Jewish Community in Belgrade has announced that one candle will be lit on the large hanukiah candelabrum in the yard of the synagogue each day of the holiday. Jews start marking Festival of Lights This ceremony will be followed every evening with additional programs and traditional treats. On Wednesday, the second day of Hanukka -known also as the Holiday of Light - Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel Yona Metzger will be in the Serbian capital city. The Jewish dignitary will be joined by Serbian President Boris Tadic for the lighting of one candle at the Belgrade synagogue yard. The central gathering in Belgrade to mark the holiday will be held at the Jewish Community premises on Dec. 24, it has been announced. Hanukkah is celebrated in memory of the three-year war that ended with the liberation of Jerusalem in 165 BC. Jews remember the victory won by Maccabeus against the Syrians, which lead to the of the re-dedication of the second temple in Jerusalem. The festivities last for eight days, and are marked in public places and Jewish homes, where nine-branched candelabrum are are also kindled.
