Serbia ranks 13th in the world in the number of suicides and the number increases every year, says Suicide Helpline Director Branka Kordic. She pointed to the growing number of suicides due to the economic crisis and difficult living conditions. Serbia ranks 13th in number of suicides Kordic added that persons over the age of 50, who faced a great number of problems and were often lonely, were the most vulnerable. “According to 2009 data, 1,400 suicides were recorded in Serbia and there were between 500 and 600 in the 1960s,” she pointed out. Kordic explained that the number of suicides increased during holidays due to great expectations and the fact that victims realized how lonely they actually were. She also criticized the media because of the way they report about suicide cases, adding that reports should not contain so many details. She stressed that such reports could have a negative impact on those people who were considering committing suicide themselves. Persons between the age of 50 and 70 make the majority of suicide victims. When it comes to women, housewives and pensioners are most likely to commit suicide while majority of men who commit suicide are pensioners, workers and farmers. The number of suicides in the world has been increasing over the years and it grew by 60 percent in the last 45 years. There are about million suicide cases around the world every year.
