Serbian parliament’s European Integration Committee Chairman Laslo Varga says that Serbia has not done enough in order to get the EU candidate status. “What Serbia has done so far is still far from what it should do in order to get the candidacy, according to information that leaked from the Tadic-Merkel meeting,” he told Novi Sad-based Hungarian language daily Magyar Szo. "Serbia has not done enough to become EU candidate” He added that the EU expected progress regarding Kosovo’s presence at regional forums to be made by Friday and denied that this was a new condition for Serbia. “The Serbian government adopted the action plan in December of last year, based on which fulfillment of the necessary conditions went the entire year, and out of 96 articles of the plan, the article 31 spoke precisely about it,” Varga stressed. He said that to the best of his knowledge not a single country had ever gotten a “conditional EU candidacy”. “That would be the same as if a student took an exam and a professor told them they would conditionally pass the exam and the student would, once they have learned the material, come, pass the exam and get a grade. Simply said, that’s nothing,” he pointed out. According to him, it is possible that no decision will be made on Friday and that the EU leaders will not determine at which future session they will decide on Serbia. He said that the second possibility would be “conditional candidacy” and that no decision would be made in that case. Varga explained that the EU leaders would then present conditions that needed to be fulfilled and announce that they would return the issue of Serbia to the agenda at their next meeting in March 2012. He added that the third option was granting of the EU candidate status to Serbia.
