Denmark's ambassador to the EU says that he does not believe negotiations between Serbia and the EU will start during his country's upcoming EU presidency. Addressing journalists at the European Policy Center in Brussels, Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen explained that he did not mention Serbia during his presentation of his country's priorities because he did not expect Serbia to start negotiations on joining the during the EU Danish presidency, that starts in January. Denmark does not see Serbian EU bid as priority Instead, the Danish official spoke about Turkey and Iceland, as two countries that are in the process of negotiations with the EU. Denmark's presidency, he explained, will focus on the troubled eurozone, and described it as "the worst crisis the EU ever had". Serbia, meanwhile, is awaiting the decision on the next stage of its EU membership bid from the European Council, due to be announced on December 9. Previously, the European Commission recommended that the Council makes Serbia a candidate for membership, but all 27 EU member states much reach consensus on this recommendation. It has been stressed on several occasions in Brussels that "the progress Belgrade makes in normalizing relations with Pristina" will be taken into account when making that decision. A date for the start of membership negotiations will be decided if and when Serbia becomes a candidate.
