"The 1990s must end," says League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV) leader Nenad Canak, and adds that this will not be possible "without lustration". He told Belgrade-based daily Politika that "a lack of ideas for the future by and large goes back to the fact that we have unfinished business from the past". LSV leader says party won't bring down govt. Canak said that his party requested the Law on Lustration to be valid for ten more years, and that he was not sure that his coalition partners would agree. But he added: "We will not bring down the government because of that." Asked whether they would still put conditions in front of the ruling majority, "for instance by failing to support the budget", Canak stated that such a move "would not make any sense, because under the circumstances where elections will be held in the next few months, it's too late to put pressure on this government." "That would mean going into elections with tensions that would not benefit our strategic partners," he was quoted as saying. Canak also stressed that he felt no responsibility "because the lustration had failed", and explained this was the case "because the LSV was at no point able to speed up the process".
