Serbian Deputy PM Ivica Dacic says the declaration on Kosovo should reflect Serbia’s determination to continue to protect national interests and EU integration. He said that the declaration on Kosovo should be carefully prepared so it would be accepted in parliament as an expression of Serbia’s determination to continue to protect its national and state interest and continue its EU integration. "Serbia wants to protect national interests, join EU" “People who are preparing the declaration are probably talking to other parties as well so the declaration would have wider support and not only support of the number necessary for the vote, because it certainly exists,” the deputy PM pointed out. He believes that the Serbian parliament session where MPs would discuss the declaration on Kosovo should be well-prepared so it would be “politically useful, not harmful”. Dacic repeated that there were different positions regarding Kosovo in Serbia, “unlike Albanians who are united and all have the same program regarding the issue”. He stressed that the fact that adoption of the draft declaration was being postponed should not be surprising “because it is a very sensitive issue and it can be a turning point in the relation toward Serbs in northern Kosovo”. The deputy prime minister noted that some politicians in Serbia wanted to end all talks with Pristina, some believed that Serbia should not negotiate with the EU at all, while others believed that Serbia should recognize Kosovo and accept the Ahtisaari plan. “If we go to the (Serbian parliament) session with those kinds of quarrels, I think that it is better not to hold the session at all this way,” he said. The deputy PM advocated continuation of the Belgrade- Pristina dialogue and finding of a just solution for the Kosovo issue. Dacic told reporters that “continuation of the dialogue has never been disputable”. He pointed out that Pristina had tried to impose a unilateral solution for the Jarinje and Brnjak administrative crossings and “represent it as a result of some agreements”. “Since that was not a result of an agreement the talks were suspended then and it is in Serbia’s interest to continue the dialogue,” the deputy prime minister concluded.
