Former coordinator of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe Erhard Busek has said that partition of Kosovo should be discussed away from the public eye. He explained that the issue should be discussed behind closed doors so that media would not create a big uproar. Kosovo partition should be “closed-door debate” “A sustainable solution for Kosovo is necessary. I proposed the partition idea because I am not sure the Kosovars are ready to arrive at it themselves. But it is too early for this right now, because the two sides need to sit down at the same table,” Busek told Belgrade-based daily Politika. The former Austrian vice chancellor believes the Albanian authorities in Pristina are not willing to consider partition at the moment, but that it remains an option. “This idea should be discussed on the side, so as not to cause a big media uproar,” he added. When asked what advice he would give to Serbian politicians if they wanted to propose border changes without turning the international community, the EU in particular, against them, Busek said he could only recommend a reality check. “Serbia needs to decide which road it wants to take. You cannot be with the EU and at the same time with Russia, China and whoever,” Busek pointed out. He noted that the election campaign season in Serbia was not the best time to make proposals, as Serbian parties currently held the position that Kosovo would remain a part of Serbia for as long as it existed. “It is impossible to discuss anything else right now,” Busek concluded.
