British Ambassador to Serbia Michael Davenport says it is realistic to expect the EC to give a positive opinion regarding Serbia’s EU candidate status. Davenport told Radio Free Europe that Serbia had made great progress by completing its cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and confirmed that his government supported the EU enlargement, but that it was important for Serbia to cooperate constructively in regard to Kosovo. British ambassador: Candidate status realistic “This is the moment when cool heads need to prevail and when calm and restraint should be shown,” he stressed. “Any rhetoric that could further set back the present state of affairs should be avoided,” Davenport said, noting that partition of Kosovo was not a solution that Great Britain would support. The ambassador added that as far as he knew, partition of Kosovo was not an official position of the Serbian government. “The position of the British government is that partition of Kosovo is neither an acceptable nor a constructive solution,” Davenport explained. “The International Court of Justice ruled last year that the declaration of independence is legal, and solutions must therefore be sought in other directions,” he said. The British ambassador concluded that continuation of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina was the best means for resolving the problem and that it was the best strategy for Serbia. He added that a solution should be sought in the Ahtisaari plan and guarantees for the protection of the Serb and other communities in Kosovo.
