Leader of the opposition DSS party Vojislav Kostinica says Serbia must clearly tell the EU that the country stands behind its people in Kosovo and Metohija. The former Yugoslav president and Serbian prime minister also urged the government to demand the removal of illegally installed customs crossings in the north, and of ethnic Albanian members of the customs and police service brought there last week. "Serbia-EU relations must be redefined" Kostunica said on Tuesday in a written statement that relations between Serbia and the EU need to be redefined and new relations based on clear foundations need to be established. He added that basic state interests will suffer as long as Serbia 2pretends not to see the EU's real intentions", and until the relations with the EU are set on healthy foundations. "The EU is abusing Serbia's trust by using the issue of candidate status to exert pressure and round off Kosovo's statehood by illegal unilateral actions," the DSS leader said and added that this all clearly shows that the EU does not see Serbia as its partner but as a country a part of whose territory "needs to be seized". Kostunica noted that Serbs in Kosovo are defending their right to be a part of the Republic of Serbia in a peaceful and dignified manner, as guaranteed by the Serbian Constitution and the UN Charter.
