EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule said late Thursday that Serbia did not have to recognize Kosovo independence in order to join the EU. He added however that it needed to strive to find a solution to normalize relations between Belgrade and Pristina. EU commissioner: Serbia doesn’t have to recognize Kosovo After a meeting with opposition Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolic, Fule called on Serbia to strive to normalize the relations with Pristina ahead of the new round of the Belgrade-Pristina talks. “It is vital that the resumed Belgrade-Pristina dialogue now delivers further results that will improve the lives of people and enhance peace, security and stability in the region,” the enlargement commissioner said. Asked by the SNS leader whether accepting Kosovo independence was a condition for Serbia to get the candidate status, Fule recalled the well-known European Commission (EC) position that, while recognizing Kosovo was not a formal condition for Serbia's European integration process, solutions needed to be found to resolve a number of outstanding issues which still prevented the normalization of relations, the AFP news agency reported Thursday.
