A new school year started on time in Montenegro, despite opposition announcements that it could be delayed. According to a Tanjug reporter, some parents are refusing to send their children to school until the issue of the Serbian language status in the Montenegrin education system is resolved. School principals have given no statements for the media, explaining that they are not allowed to comment the boycott without permission from the Montenegro’s Education Ministry. Opposition parties, the New Serb Democracy, Socialist People’s Party of Montenegro and Movement for Changes have requested Montenegrin Prime Minister Igor Luksic to postpone the beginning of the school year until the issue is resolved. The three parties want the Serbian language to be equal to the Montenegrin and demand that the subject be called Montengrin, Serbian/native language and literature, but the prime minister refuses to accept that and insists that the name should be Montenegrin/native language and literature. The Education Ministry has warned schools and parents that classes are obligatory and that they will be conducted in accordance with the curriculum. The entire confusion was created after census results had been published, showing that majority of population spoke Serbian while a smaller number spoke Montenegrin. The Montenegrin opposition has ever since been demanding that the Serbian language is equal to Montenegrin in the country’s education system and laws. The ruling parties, led by Luksic, are against the request. However, it is necessary to reach an agreement on the language issue in order to adopt the law on MPs, which is one of the conditions for Montenegro’s further progress in the EU integrations.
