The EP Rapporteur for Kosovo says Serbia "should forget about becoming EU candidate unless there are results in the dialogue and good relations with Kosovo". "If there is no progress in the dialogue, which also implies good neighborly relations, it will be impossible for Serbia to obtain the status of candidate country," Ulrike Lunacek told Pristina-based Albanian language Radio Dukadjini. "No one in EU would accept new Cyprus" The Austrian politician expressed her satisfaction over "the straightforward attitude and message of German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her recent visit to Belgrade". Asked if it would suffice for Serbia to have "good neighborliness relations with Kosovo" in order to join the EU, or whether the country "needed to make one more step and recognize Kosovo", Lunacek said that Serbia should respect "the state of Kosovo". "No one in the European Union, as far as I know, would accept to have a new Cyprus, a country whose borders are not (strictly) defined. In the end, I do not think it will be possible for Serbia not to respect Kosovo's independence," concluded Lunacek.
