“U.S. continues to support Serbia’s EU integration”

The U.S. will continue to support Serbia on its European path, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Reeker says.

The U.S. will continue to support Serbia on its European path, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Reeker says. He added in Belgrade on Thursday that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue represented a means to overcome contradictory issues and find solutions that would contribute to people's well-being. “U.S. continues to support Serbia’s EU integration” Reeker underscored that one of the aims of the cooperation of the "two countries" referred to expansion of partnership in the years to come, the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade stated in a release following the meeting between the U.S. diplomat and Serbian officials. The U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state said that he appreciated the time which Serbian officials devoted to him during his short visit and added that he was glad to have had a chance to hear their vision for Serbia. He also said that the talks covered a wide variety of areas of cooperation, starting from economy and defense up to the strengthening of rule of law. “The U.S remains an ardent advocate of Serbia's European integration and it will continue to support Serbia on its EU path,” he pointed out and added that in this context, the U.S. saw the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue as the means for the two countries to solve open issues and find solutions that would contribute to better life for people in Kosovo and Serbia. During a number of previous visits and his latest stay in Belgrade, as one of the best cities in Europe, Reeker has a chance to see fresh dynamics of the country's European perspective, the U.S. Embassy stated in a release. Reeker expressed "satisfaction with the opportunity to visit the hometown of world's number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, having in mind the fact that the U.S. Open is due to start soon". The U.S. official visited Belgrade as part of his short visit to the region, during which he conferred with regional officials over the U.S. activities aimed at ensuring long-lasting stability in the Balkans, including Serbia's European integration. During his first visit to Belgrade as U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state, he met with several Serbian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic and Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac. Reeker also conferred with representatives of the civil society over a wide variety of issues in the area of bilateral relations and Serbia's European aspirations. The visit of the U.S. official to Belgrade underscores the continuous commitment of the U.S. to Serbia as a partner in the preservation of regional stability and integration in the community of western countries, the release states. During their meeting, the Serbian interior minister and Reeker underscored the importance of the level of cooperation which the Serbian Interior Ministry and the U.S. security structures have achieved in the fight against organized crime and terrorism and especially in the fight against illegal drug trafficking, as well as in the domains of protection and emergency management and witness protection, the interior minister's media cooperation office stated in the release.
