Priština "lobbies" against Serbia's EU accession

Kosovo Albanians are lobbying against Serbia's European integration as it fears that Kosovo will remain a failed state, Serbian government officials said.

Kosovo Albanians are lobbying against Serbia's European integration as it fears that Kosovo will remain a failed state, Serbian government officials said. The officials, who reportedly "wanted to remain anonymous", told the Belgrade-based daily Blic that “Kosovo is increasing their demands and conditions for the success of the dialogue with Belgrade” because they were taking advantage of an important moment for Serbia. Pristina "lobbies" against Serbia's EU accession The daily recalled an earlier statement by Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic that “Pristina wants to ruin our European plans.” Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci has received a great number of European officials in Pristina over the recent weeks. “This is not the first time Serbia is hard-pressed ahead of important dates for the country, such as obtaining the EU candidacy status and the date of accession negotiations, but Hashim Thaci cannot ruin our European plans,” Djelic pointed out and added that Pristina was not alone and that there were also others “who wish to ruin the position that Serbia has built in Europe and the world.” The government officials told Blic that Pristina had been given full support from EU's major powers to maximize its demands. “Pristina's biggest fear is that it could remain a 'failed state,' that the level of their own integration in international institutions will remain as it is, and that Serbia, when it gets the candidacy and the date for negotiations, might even make progress and realize its aspirations towards the Kosovo north,” New Policy Center NGO Executive Director Vladimir Todoric told Blic. The daily recalled an earlier statement by Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Božidar Đelić that “Priština wants to ruin our European plans.”

Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci has received a great number of European officials in Priština over the recent weeks.

“This is not the first time Serbia is hard-pressed ahead of important dates for the country, such as obtaining the EU candidacy status and the date of accession negotiations, but Hashim Thaci cannot ruin our European plans,” Đelić pointed out and added that Priština was not alone and that there were also others “who wish to ruin the position that Serbia has built in Europe and the world.”

The government officials told Blic that Priština had been given full support from EU's major powers to maximize its demands.
