Several hundred Serbs in the Kosovo village of Priluzje protested on Monday against the commencement of construction works on a bridge over the Sitnica River. The bridge would connect this village - one of the isolated Serb enclaves south of the Ibar River - with a number of ethnic Albanian villages situated at the foot of Mt. Cicavica. The residents of Priluzje, near Vucitrn, said that they were against the construction of this bridge because they have security concerns, and recalled that prior to the 1999 conflict in the province, while the bridge was still functioning, they faced numerous problems with ethnic Albanians from Glavotina and other villages. They are now protesting out of fear that incidents would start happening again. The pre-construction works on this bridge started on Monday morning on the shore of the Sitnica River in the vicinity of the ethnic Albanian villages. The residents of Priluzje expect that the security issues will be resolved in the talks with KFOR, and demand additional security guarantees to stay in the village. Around 2,500 Serbs live in Priluzje, and several thousand Albanians in the villages situated at the foot of the mountain. The residents of Priluzje expect that KFOR Commander Erhard Buehler, with whom they talked two days ago, will address them on Monday evening. "Buehler did not know what problems could arise with the construction of this bridge. If that bridge is built, it will disturb the fragile peace that we have managed to establish," Vucitrn Mayor Zoran Rakic told Tanjug earlier. Rakic also stated that local Serbs were in fear for the safety of their children, who go to school on foot, as they feared that ethnic Albanians would engage in provocations and attacks.
