Leader of the opposition SNS party Tomislav Nikolic says it was "just a matter of time when Serbia will be presented with the choice between the EU and Kosovo". Nikolic stated for the Monday issue of the Belgrade-based daily Blic that "no one has officially posed that dilemma yet, but it is lingering in the air". Opposition leader on "choice between EU and Kosovo" “It is just a matter of time when Serbia will be presented with that choice,” Nikolic said, underlining that if the EU delivers such an ultimatum, the citizens of Serbia, rather than politicians, should decide on the matter. As for politicians - the SNS leader explained - they would "do just fine whether or not Kosovo is a part of Serbia". When asked whether the partition of Kosovo is the only option, as some claim, and whether the Serbian Constitution leaves room for that, Nikolic stressed that this was not the case, and that any change in territorial organization or state structure needs to muster a two-thirds majority in the Serbian parliament, which would then call a referendum on that issue. “Some politicians may say that they do not care about the EU, that Kosovo can only be the autonomous province. However, those making such statements do not plan to pursue this career seriously. At the same time, no Serbian politician can give up on Kosovo, and continue to do this job. That is impossible. The citizens of Serbia are the ones to decide upon the issue,” Nikolic said. The policy dubbed “both the EU and Kosovo” should be pursued “until the end”, he said, claiming that this was also stipulated by the Constitution and that "both tasks should be fulfilled". As for the temporary agreement reached to defuse tensions in northern Kosovo, Nikolic said the government representatives "gave in to all demands" coming from the Kosovo Albanians, and "presented this in Belgrade as a good deal". The leader of the opposition party also criticized the choice of Borislav Stefanovic as the negotiating team head, saying that "the president or the prime minister" should have assumed that role.
