Serbia’s Labor and Social Policy Minister Rasim Ljajic has said that “his suspicions that The Hague condition was only a smokescreen for Kosovo have come true”. He said that “he cannot guarantee” that Serbia would not be forced to choose between Kosovo and the EU in later stages of the EU integration. Minister: Hague was just smokescreen for Kosovo “Even if we had not arrested (Goran) Hadzic, thanks to (Ratko) Mladic’s extradition we got the candidate status. But the date is still uncertain because the EU expects concrete progress in Belgrade-Pristina negotiations. We are struggling to get it but the ball is not in our court,“ Ljajic pointed out. “It was evident the day after we extradited Karadzic in 2008, when they almost did not even mention it at the EU Council of Ministers meeting in Brussels. When we extradited Mladic they immediately wanted Hadzic. That’s a sort of hypocrisy that Europe is demonstrating toward us. Kosovo now emerges as the main condition and we need to openly say that to the citizens,” the minister told daily Vecernje novosti. When asked whether the solution is partition of Kosovo and whether integration of the north Kosovo into Pristina’s institutions is already underway, Ljajic said that Slobodan Milosevic was the last Serbian politician who was able to dictate solutions to the Kosovo problem because he had had an actual power in Kosovo. “A great chance for many solutions that are more favorable than the one we have now was missed then. If someone had offered partition to the Albanians back then, I believe that majority would have been in favor. We have new circumstances now and mentioning of partition is completely counterproductive,” the minister was quoted as saying. Rasim Ljajic (Tanjug, file)
