Former Hague Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte says the arrest of Goran Hadzic is a huge success of the Serbian authorities. The Serbian government has made a huge step towards Serbia's democratic and peaceful future. This is of considerable political importance, she said in a statement for Tanjug. Huge success of Serbian authorities, says Del Ponte Del Ponte expressed her belief that Hadzic's arrest, as well as the extradition of Ratko Mladic, is very important for Serbia's EU pathway, and added that Serbia's EU integration will now certainly move faster. The Serbian government's actions were very good and intelligent, and to the benefit of the country's future, she underscored, adding that the country's EU pathway will now be easier. Hadzic's arrest is a huge success for the international judiciary as well, she pointed out. We can now say that all those accused of war crimes on the territory of former Yugoslavia are arrested. The mandate of the UN Security Council is fulfilled, which is very important. I believe everything has been done for the perpetrators of war crimes to be arrested and face court, which is important for the victims, she said. Del Ponte stated that Hadzic is an 'old acquaintance' of The Hague Tribunal, located by the Hague in Belgrade and followed, but by the time the arrest warrant was issued, he disappeared. She said that Hadzic was last time seen getting into a car with only one bag and driving away in an unknown direction. That happened after the arrest warrant was issued, and he had been on the run ever since, Del Ponte said, adding that she is personally glad that all 161 persons accused have been arrested, and will stand trial. We can now say that the mission is successfully completed, Del Ponte said, adding that, upon the completion of trials and appeal proceedings, the Tribunal will be able to close its doors.
