Croat Police General Djuro Brodarac, who was arrested recently for crimes committed against Serbs in Sisak in the early 1990s, died on Wednesday. According to Croatian website index.hr, Brodarac died at 08:25 this morning. The Municipal Court in Osijek has confirmed his death. Brodarac was first taken to the cardiology department but was later moved to the intensive care unit. Index.hr learned that the Municipal Court in Osijek will request a complete medical file and order an autopsy. One of his lawyers Petar Sale told index.hr that his client did not die and that he was murdered by the state. “Djuro Brodarac was killed by the system. We have the entire possible medical documentation that we submitted to allow him to be in house arrest, because he was a seriously ill man. His condition was such that he needed to be either in hospital or in house arrest, where he would have better care and doctors,” the lawyer stressed. According to him, his client was placed in a holding cell with six more men, where the temperature was 45 degrees Celsius and “they must have known that this was going to happen”. Brodarac was arrested together with Vlada Milankovic and Drago Bosnjak. He was accused of command responsibility for the death of 31 civilians and illegal detention and torture of 38 civilians. Brodarac was transferred to the hospital on Tuesday due to heart problems. According to Croatian website index.hr, Brodarac died at 08:25 this morning.
