Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic told Berlin-based daily Tagesspiegel that Serbia expected to begin the EU accession talks in 2012. He added that Belgrade would not recognize Kosovo's independence. Serbia expects accession talks in 2012, FM says “We hope that the European Commission (EC) will recommend to the EU member states in October that Serbia should be given the candidate status, and that the date should be set for the start of accession talks in 2012,” Jeremic was quoted as saying. He stated that this would be “a signal of continuity for the entire region,” and that it would not be good if the EU integration of the Western Balkans was hindered. The Serbian foreign minister pointed out that Belgrade and Pristina had been holding a EU-facilitated dialogue on technical issues important for the every day life of people since March. “That is a step in the right direction, without prejudging the issue of Kosovo's status,” Jeremic stressed, adding that Serbia would not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo.
