Slovak FM Mikulas Dzurinda has said that Serbia should get both the EU candidate status and the date for the beginning of negotiations by the end of the year. “At the last EU Foreign Affairs Council, the issue of the Western Balkans was discussed. I noticed that Serbia has made three important steps in the past year. Therefore, I expect that this year will be the one for Serbia,” he told Belgrade-based daily Vecernje novosti Saturday. Slovak FM: Serbia should get candidate status by year’s end Dzurinda said that the first step was the joint approach regarding the UN resolution on Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, where Serbia showed a high level of understanding, which he assessed as flexibility. The second step was the beginning of direct talks between Belgrade and Pristina and the last one the arrest and extradition of Hague Tribunal indictee Ratko Mladic. “These three significant steps show Serbia's commitment,” the Slovak foreign minister stressed. In view of the ideas on the division of Kosovo, Dzurinda said that one should let Belgrade and Pristina find the solution. “There are politicians who believe that this idea is not good or realistic. But the people in Belgrade should know what is realistic and what is not,” was quoted as saying. Mikulas Dzurinda (Beta, file)
