Serbian President Boris Tadic traveled to London on Sunday to support Novak Djokovic in his first Wimbledon final. The Serbian, who is as of Monday officially the best-ranked tennis player in the world, defeated Spain's Rafael Nadal and made history as the first Serb to win the tournament and top the ATP rankings. Tadic praises Serb champion after Wimbledon final "I don't know how to thank Novak enough for everything he has done for Serbia and our people," commented Tadic in a statement for B92 after the match. "It cannot be described what his success means to our country. This is an example of how hard work and discipline are important in achieving one's goals," said he. Tadic also said it was a pleasure to watch file video footage of Djokovic as a young boy "announcing" that his goal was to become the world number one, and then watch him achieve this. "This is the greatest success of our sport ever. Watching the final, as a Serbian citizen, I almost died," Tadic confided in our reporter. "We have suffered for a long time and we've been under great pressure. For our people in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, here in England and all over the world these are the moments of healing. It is great for Serbia, which has long been presented in a bad light, with the whole story built on bad foundations. Novak made a huge accomplishment," according to the president. Tadic also noted that he would "let Djokovic be president immediately", that he was "eager to be replaced by someone like that", but that he would "certainly not" make room for someone of lesser quality. Back in Belgrade, as has become customary, the country's top officials sent their messages congratulating Novak Djokovic on his latest success. The tennis star will arrive in Serbia in the afternoon, and will be welcomed by his fans in the evening. Tadic in London on Sunday (Tanjug)
