Businessman Milan Beko has said that although he previously did finance political parties, he was not doing so "for a long time". In an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Blic, Beko explained that there was "no longer any need for engagement of that nature". Tycoon says he's "no longer financing parties" But he noted that funding parties was "the least profitable investment that can be made". "Our politicians are not people of their word, and will do anything to later prove they were not in that kind of relationship," explained Beko. He added that the reason he no longer thought it was necessary to spend money on parties was that Serbia "in the past several years became democratized, after all". Asked whether his business was built on privileges, Beko said the charge was "a stereotype with a political destination". "I do not believe that there is a person subjected to more investigation than I have been. That's been going on for no less than 12 years. What does it show, if after all that time the authorities don't know whether my possessions are legal or not? Does it speak badly of me, or of those who have been doing that all these years," he wondered, noting that "once it moves to courts, everything is legal". Beko went on to say that corruption was when "powerful people buy their business privileges, having a weak state and its structure on their payroll". "Our reality is different: here, racketeering rules. It goes the other way, there is a political oligarchy that exponentiates authority and abuses its power," the businessman was quoted as saying. "Political elites have feudalized all resources," Beko said, noting that public companies did not employ professionals, but rather obedient party men, who, he concluded, "are putting a price tag on all resources, even those that are legally free."
