A total of 138 Serbian citizens requested asylum in Germany in May, which means that their number considerably reduced compared to March (334) and April (227). This means that Serbia, which used to be one of the leading countries when it comes the number of asylum requests, now takes fifth place after Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Iran, the German Interior Ministry has stated. Number of asylum seekers from Serbia reduces A total of 1,586 asylum requests came from Serbia from January-May 2011, putting Serbia on third place, after Afghanistan and Iraq. The issue of asylum requests from Serbia, where the number of asylum seekers drastically increased after the abolishment of the visa regime, was one of the topical bilateral issues last year. The German authorities stressed that the requests coming from Serbia, as a stable developing country, have no chance for success, adding that Germany no longer provides state assistance for the return of rejected asylum seekers.

A total of 1,586 asylum requests came from Serbia from January-May 2011, putting Serbia on third place, after Afghanistan and Iraq.
