EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule says the European Commission might at year's end recommend start of accession talks for some Western Balkan countries. “This year might be important for all Western Balkan countries. Considering the progress achieved, the EC might recommend the beginning of the accession negotiations for as many as three countries,” he told Vienna-based daily Die Presse. “Accession talks could begin at year’s end” Asked whether he meant Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia, he said yes. “This is still far from certain,” the European commissioner said, adding that this year the EC would complete the progress reports on the countries earlier than usual. “In the meantime, the governments and parliaments of EU member countries can prepare the decision,” Fule explained.
