A spokesman for the opposition DSS party says the government is trying to hide from the public the fact that it is hosting a NATO conference in Belgrade. The gathering has been scheduled for June 13-14. Opposition party unhappy about NATO summit Petar Petkovic noted as he addressed journalists in Belgrade on Monday that a majority of citizens in Serbia harbored anti-NATO feelings. "How is it possible for a militarily neutral country such as Serbia to host a summit organized by NATO," he wondered. Petkovic believes that the authorities decided not to promote this gathering in the media, aware of the huge amount of dissatisfaction in Serbia when it comes to "joining NATO". The DSS spokesman put all this in the context of what he described as "an unprecedented level of influence on the media exercised by the ruling coalition". The situation is such, he continued, that any media outlet that dares speak up contrary to what the authorities are saying "will be punished and denounced". According to Petkovic, this has been the case ever since the adoption of the Law on Information, which introduced "draconian fines, and in that way auto-censorship, because the media feel existentially threatened". "Any media that speaks openly about the failed policy of the authorities will come under attack... this is absolutely unacceptable for a democratic government, and especially for the country's president," said the DSS spokesman, commenting on the criticism the editorial policy of the Belgrade-based Alo tabloid, recently voiced by Boris Tadic.
