Although cooperation with The Hague was one of the main obstacles on Serbia’s EU path, it is still unknown whether the Dutch will support Serbia’s EU candidacy. The Netherlands, which insisted on Ratko Mladic’s arrest the most, is still unsure whether it will support a decision to give Serbia EU candidate status and set a date for the beginning of accession negotiations with the EU. Dutch still hesitant about supporting Serbia’s candidacy Council of Europe (CoE) President Herman Van Rompuy has said that Mladic's arrest is a very important step in the right direction. “Serbia's EU-candidate status is now being considered, but Serbia of course has to comply with all the conditions to start the EU integration process like all other countries aspiring to membership,“ he said. Dutch Ambassador to Serbia Laurent Stokvis has welcomed the arrest but was far more hesitant in his statement. “What will it mean for the future? We'll have to wait a few more steps for that. Primarily, there is (Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor) Serge Brammertz's report which will be presented on June 6 and European Commission's opinion whether Serbia has made enough progress to get the candidate status,“ he pointed out. All EU member states will have to support the EC's opinion. The Netherlands has so far insisted on Serbia's full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. Brammertz's latest report, however, does not say that because it had been submitted to the UN Security Council before Mladic was arrested. The Hague Tribunal chief prosecutor has said that he will point out that there have been some dramatic changes in Serbia's cooperation with The Hague. Serbian President Boris Tadic will meet with Van Rompuy on Monday.
