LDP leader Cedomir Jovanovic’s comment regarding the number of women in electoral lists has enraged the Islamic Community in Serbia. Jovanovic said in parliament during a debate on the law on the election of MPs on Wednesday that he would not support regulations that discriminated women and which would “make his three daughters hostages of a Sharia society“. LDP leader in new parliament gaffe The Islamic Community in Serbia Meshihat has reacted to the statement, explaining that Shariah, Shariah law and Sharia society were Islamic values based on Islam's fundamental sources – Koran and Sunnah. “Mentioning of these values, which are holy for all the Muslims in the world, in a negative and disrespectful context is unacceptable to the Islamic Community, all Muslims in the world, but also to all citizens who advocate tolerance among people,“ said Meshihat Spokesman Samir Tandir. He pointed out that the Islamic Community wanted to believe that this was only a recklessness and not Jovanovic's actual opinion. The LDP said commenting on the Islamic Community's reaction that it was logical that religious communities, both the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) and the Islamic Community in Serbia, would not always have understanding for their positions. The party also pointed out that the LDP advocated women's equality in politics and added that they decisively defended the rights of Muslims in Serbia. “Those are European values, just as LDP's insists that Serbia joins condemnation of violation of human rights in the world, including those regimes that implemented inhumane punishments and carried out discrimination while interpreting Sharia laws. We respect all differences and tradition but that will not stop us from building Serbia as an equal community in which human rights rule,“ it is said in the LDP announcement. Previously, Jovanovic's statements in parliament concerning african nations caused condemnations and led to his apology. Cedomir Jovanovic
