30 people including high-ranking politicians and customs officials have been charged with smuggling goods through the Romanian Black Sea port of Constanta. Several businessmen and brokers from China, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria were also among those indicted, Agence France Presse (AFP) has reported. On Monday, a top official from the Romanian Interior Ministry, Laurentiu Mironescu, was sacked after being arrested on corruption allegations in connection to the case. A senator from the ruling Democrat-Liberal party (PDL), Mircea Banias, has been indicted by the prosecutors as well as the commander of the naval forces from the Constant border police who is accused of receiving goods from China in exchange for confidential information. This is the second large clean-up operation of Romania’s police and customs officers. 180 people were arrested several months ago for cigarette smuggling from Serbia and other neighboring countries. Romania is often criticized by the European Commission (EC) for not doing enough in combat against corruption and judicial reforms so the authorities in Bucharest have obviously decided to step up their combat against organized crime. Romania has to fulfill this condition in order to join the Schengen zone, which is expected to happen by the end of the year.
