Hollywood actor and producer Leonardo DiCaprio is preparing to make a film about a global gang of jewel thieves, writes a Belgrade daily. According to the Blic newspaper, the gang - dubbed "Pink Panthers" by British police almost a decade ago - is "Serb", and will be the subject of the new movie. Ilic then told the media that this was "a very serious story". "But everything's still a secret and I cannot discuss it. It is true that a film is in the works, they work on it in great detail, and if it does happen, it will be an excellent job," Ilic confided in the newspaper. The radio host, however, would not reveal why he was chosen to discuss the Panthers. "There are several ideas, I don't know what they will come to, but there is great interest in the Pink Panther gang abroad, much more than in Serbia," Ilic noted. Belgrade's Interpol office also did not wish to say what they discussed with the visiting screenwriter. The gang's global real-life exploits have often been compared to "the movies" by both the media and police. It is believed that the group is loosely coordinated, and according to some reports, led by men with criminal, military and police backgrounds from the Balkans. They stole hundreds of millions of euros in jewelry in heists that took place in locations as far apart as Tokyo, Dubai, and Monaco. Interpol has set up a special unit charged with dismantling the gang. (Beta/AP)
