Interior Minister Ivica Dacic on Tuesday announced a series of stricter measures aimed at decreasing the number of false asylum seekers from Serbia. Dacic, however, also noted that the country also needed the support of EU partners. MUP to create database on asylum seekers After a meeting with the Ministry of the Interior (MUP) heads and the Police Directorate, Dacic said that one of the measures would also be the introduction of a database and records of false asylum seekers, which would be crated with the help of the countries in which they had requested asylum, and contain the data of all those who have been returned in the procedure of readmission or whose request was denied. “We will introduce records, since these are mostly people who go from country to country requesting asylum. To avoid being included on the list, most asylum seekers give up on their request a couple of days before the bringing of the decision”, Dacic said. Stating that among the Serbian citizens who have requested asylum in EU countries, 95 percent were Roma and ethnic Albanians from the south, along with a small number of Bosniaks (Muslims) and five percent Serbs, Dacic called upon all those who were trying to, by false representation of their situation, gain asylum in one of the EU member countries, to refrain from doing so. "The Interior Ministry will initiate amendments of several laws under its jurisdiction, and will also request the EU’s opinion of whether it is possible to introduce restrictive regulations, in which case one of the measures could also be the temporary taking away of passports for one or two years from the person who abuses it," Dacic said. He added that the Ministry would propose that the law include the organizing and aiding of illegal migrations as a criminal act. Dacic also announced a media campaign in the form of a television video clip carrying a clear message that the abuse of the right to asylum will be sanctioned. Ivica Dacic (Tanjug, file)
