He added that the discussion had only recently started. EU rep warns of possible suspension of visa liberalization He told reporters in Svilajnac that many steps needed to be taken before such a decision could be made and that he therefore hoped that the EU and Serbia would find a solution in order to prevent more false asylum seekers. “We are discussing some provisions of the agreement that would be a guarantee,” Degert stressed and assessed that it was very important to organize a good readmission system. “In order for the visa liberalization to be suspended it is necessary that all EU member states, European Commission and the European Parliament adopt it,” he explained. “The issue of false asylum seekers is very difficult for the EU member states and represents a serious problem, especially for Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg,” the head of the EU delegation to Serbia said and added that Serbia and other Balkan countries needed to show that the number of false asylum seekers was decreasing instead of constantly increasing since the implementation of the visa liberalization. “The trend needs to change,” Degert stressed, adding that the EU was under pressure from illegal immigrants from the southern Mediterranean, southeast Europe and the Balkans. The European Commission (EC) received from Belgian Migration and Asylum Policy State Secretary Melchior Wathelet a letter regarding Serbia's visa liberalization and the growing number of false asylum seekers, it was confirmed for Tanjug in the EC on Thursday. However, the European Justice Commissariat recalled that in late February the EC considered a mechanism for monitoring the effects of the visa liberalization for the Western Balkan countries, adding that this issue will be further discussed in June when the EC will present its official report to the EU Council and the European Parliament.
