MPs will begin a new sitting today, at which they will discuss, among other items on the agenda, the proposed amendments to the Law on the Election of MPs. The draft seeks to abolish the institutions of blank MP resignations. Parliament agenda includes blank resignations Prior to that, the Serbian parliament will vote on 19 bills and other acts, whereby they will end the previous sitting, the third within the spring session, which began on March 1. The adoption of the amendments to the Law on the Election of MPs by June 2011 is one of the European Commission's conditions for giving a positive opinion on Serbia's request for the EU membership. The amendments to the Law on the Election of MPs, which were proposed by 102 MPs of the ruling coalition, envisage the abolishment of blank resignations. An MP will be allowed to submit a validated resignation to the Serbian parliament either personally, through an authorized person or by registered mail, within three days since its validation. It is also envisaged that, in case of early termination, a mandate should be given to the first next candidate from the election list. According to the amendments, at least one in four candidates on the election list should be a woman, and women should comprise at least 30 percent of the election list.
